Donde Viven Los Monstruos

Also known as Where The Wild Things Are. Monday morning, Carolyn and I arrived at a local public school to 35 children screaming with excitement. We were there with our translator Maria to read the above mentioned book and make masks with the children. What a treat! Our hour and half there went by in a flash. Again, I wish I spoke the language. To look back at the face of child tugging at your sleeve holding up a mask saying something, but the only thing I can understand is Señora is, well, not a great feeling. However, all the same I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the creativity and excitement of the children as they made their masks. They tackled the craft with such enthusiasm! We took a group photo then departed leaving the teacher and aid with very amped up students!

¡Buen Provecho! This more or less means enjoy your meal, which we did very much Monday evening with Jeff, a Common Hope staff member. We ate at a wonderful restaurant in Antigua. The evening was filled with great conversation and entertainment, especially when Maxxe joined the Guatemalan Spanish Conquistadors dancers. Jeff did question how many noticed that the dancer dressed as a devil was a blonde. I believe the devil was representing what they call a Ladino, which is a person not part of the indigenous people. Definition is a cunning and crafty devil. I may be wrong on this........we shall see.

Jeff came to Common Hope in February 2001 to oversee the construction of New Hope Village, and since July 2003 has served as Director of Strategic Planning. In that capacity he works with staff in both Guatemala and the U.S. to identify goals, opportunities, and the means to achieve them. He also manages special projects, such as construction of the New Hope School and the policy restructuring initiative.

This afternoon after a morning of building a stove, we head to the New Hope site! It is hard to believe our trip is beginning to come to a close!
